Answer:

During upstream

t1= s/(vm - vr)

t1= s/3

During downstream

t2= s/(vm+vr)

t2= s/5

now,total time

t= t1+t2

0.8= s/3 + s/5

0.8= s(3+5)/15

8s= 12

s= 3/2

s= 1.5

he goes 1.5 km upstream.

hope it helps u

Hello Mate,

Here is your answer in a more simpler method,

Given:

v_{1} = 5kmph \\  \\  u_{2} = 3kmph \\  \\ total \: time  = 48min \\  \\  = 0.8hrs

To Find:

Distance traveled upstream

We Know,

t =  \frac{d}{v}

So,

 t_{1} =  \frac{d}{5}   \\  \\  t_{2} =  \frac{d}{3}

As given that,

  t_{1}  +    t_{2} = 0.8

So,

 \frac{d}{5}  +  \frac{d}{3}  = 0.8 \\  \\  \frac{3d + 5d}{15}  = 0.8 \\  \\ 8d = 15 \times 0.8 \\  \\ 8d = 12 \\  \\ d =  \frac{12}{8}  \\  \\ d =  \frac{3}{2}  \\  \\ d  = 1.5km

Hence the distance traveled upstream (d) is equal to 1.5 kilometers

Hope it helps:)
