defect is myopia
cause is elongation of the eye ball
correction is by wearing spectacles of suitable power with a concave lens

He has myopia or nearsightedness.

Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long, relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye. This also can be caused by the cornea and/or lens being too curved for the length of the eyeball. In some cases, myopia is due to a combination of these factors.

Although the vision of most people with nearsightedness can be corrected with glasses and contact lenses, high levels of myopia increase the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment and myopic macular degeneration — all of which can cause irreversible vision loss.
