Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.
Example: He said,"I am playing football." (Direct)
He said that he was playing football. (Indirect)
In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'today' changes to 'that day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'you' changes to 'I', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day' and many other words will have to be made.
The captain said,"Alas! Our foes are too strong." (Direct)
- The captain exclaimed and said that their foes were too strong. (Indirect)
Hari said,"How beautiful the rain is?" (Direct)
- Hari exclaimed how beautiful the rain was. (Indirect)
Hope it helps :)
