The rain was icy, cold as it gently fell upon my thick furry coat. I shook the water away once in a while as I walked around the gloomy streets to find shelter for the night. The refreshing smell of rain filled the place. Just this morning, I was the happiest dog in the world. I didn’t listen to the wise words my owner Rose had given to me. I went out to play without permission and now I am lost.
The sun rose from its long sleep, warming up my damp fur causing me to wake up. I decided to find my way back home. I still have hope. I closed my eyes to concentrate on the smells rushing through my nostrils. Focused hard as ever, I didn’t realise I was being followed by a van for quite a while already. A leathery touch grabbed me by my waist. I tried to wriggle loose but it was useless. I was thrown carelessly into the dark van. Looking around, I saw many other dogs surrounding me.
A deep voice then spoke up in a shock “We’re going to the dog pound. If we are good-looking we will be adopted, if not then you’ll just have to stay there forever.” The last word echoed through my mind. What about Rose?
“Let’s find a way to escape.” I said.
We huddled around. Only whispers were heard through the quietness. We finally come up with a plan.
I laid on the ground, taking short deep breaths that weren’t noticeably with my eyes tightly closed. All the dogs surrounded me and started howling as sorrowful as possible as I was playing dead. The drivers took notice of this terrible sound and stopped the van. They rushed out and opened the back van door. All the dogs froze in their spots. Only the voices of the two men were heard through the quietness. They muttered a few words of annoyance. Everyone was waiting for the action to begin. A pair of hands grabbed hold of my body and dragged me out .I held back my breath. A howl broke the silence that was the signal to escape. I opened my eyes in a flash, raced out of the place with everyone else, leaving the two frozen statues behind.
I kept on running not daring to look back. After what seemed like forever, I stopped to take a breath of the glorious air. I looked around. I recognized this place. It was my street. I felt happy but also scared. Will Rose accept me back? I lifted up my nose and sniffed her scent out. I followed the trail and suddenly bumped into someone. I looked up to see Rose. Our eyes met with each other.
“Samba is that you,” Rose with shock and relief.
I leaped up with joy, chased my tail a few times and gave Rose a lick on her warm face. Never give up hope on something you haven’t found.
