let the numbers be 5x and 6x 

5X : 6X 

if 8  is subtracted from both 



now,

(5x - 8)/(6x- 8) = 4/5 

cross multiplication,

5(5x - 8 ) = 4(6x - 8 ) 

25x - 40 = 24x - 32

40 -32 = 24x - 25x

8 = x 

now the numbers are

5*8 =40

and

6*8 = 48
