1.a Finland is a country in Northern Europe. Sweden borders it to the northwest, Estonia to the south, Russia to the east, and Norway to the north. Finland is part of the European Union with its capital city being Helsinki. With a population of 5.5 million people, it has over 187,000 lakes. The thousands of lakes in Finland are the reason why the country's nickname is “the land of a thousand lakes.” A comparison of the number of lakes with its population reveals that there is one lake for every 26 Finns. Water makes up 10% of the land area in Finland. Then two-thirds of the land is made up of forest vegetation. As a result, Finland’s scenic beauty is incomparable to most nations in Europe. It is no wonder Finland has become one of Europe’s best tourist destinations.

b The North European Plain remains the most densely populated region of Europe. The Central Uplands extend east-west across central Europe and include western France and Belgium, southern Germany, the Czech Republic, and parts of northern Switzerland and Austria.

c Despite its name, the Caspian Sea can be called either a lake or a sea. Kukral refers to it as a lake, as do many scholars. It has historically been considered a sea because of its size and its saline water, but it embodies many characteristics of lakes.

2.a A fjord is formed when a glacier retreats, after carving its typical U-shaped valley, and the sea fills the resulting valley floor. This forms a narrow, steep sided inlet (sometimes deeper than 1300 metres) connected to the sea

b  The Southern Highlands, also locally referred to as the Highlands, is a geographical region and district in New South Wales, Australia and is 110 km south-west of Sydney. The entire region is under the local government area of the Wingecarribee Shire. The region is also considered a wine region.
