• When passage through the prism, the white light is separated into its component colours - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. The separation of visible light into its different colours is known as dispersion.

The dispersion of white light occurs because the angle of refraction of lights of different colours is different when passing through the glass prism.

• The splitting of light into its 'component colours' is dispersion.
When white light is dispersed into seven colours by a prism, different colours of light bend through different angles with respect to incident ray is known as scattering of light.
