LET THE MARKS OF THE SUBJECT OF ENGLISH BE X AND MATHS BE Y .

THEREFORE ;

ACCORDING TO THE GIVEN CONDITIONS ;

X + Y = 30

X = 30 - Y ----(1)

(Y + 2 ) ( X - 3 ) = 210

XY - 3Y + 2X - 6 = 210

XY - 3Y + 2X = 216

XY + 2X = 216 + 3Y ----(2)

SUBSTITUTING EQ (1) IN EQ (2)

(30 - Y ) Y + 2 (30 - Y ) = 216 + 3Y

30Y - Y^2 + 60 - 2Y = 216 + 3Y

- Y^2 + 30Y - 2Y - 3Y = 216 - 60

- Y^2 + 25Y = 156

Y^2 - 25Y + 156 = 0

Y^2 - 12Y - 13Y + 156 = 0

Y( Y - 12 ) - 13 ( Y - 12 )=0

(Y - 12 ) ( Y - 13 ) = 0

THEREFORE ,

Y = 12 AND Y = 13

CASE 1

Y = 12

SUBSTITUTING Y = 12 IN EQ (1)

X = 30 - 12

X = 18

CASE 2

Y = 13

SUBSTITUTING Y = 13 IN EQ (1)

X = 30 - 13

X = 17

THEREFORE ;

X = 17 , 18

Y = 13 , 12
