The poem is about a child watching his father. in that context ‘hold’ here means to hold onto or hang on to everything that the father says or does.
Children are like sponges. They observe everything that people say and do. Therefore, ‘hold’ here means to absorb and to retain, just as the child will absorb all that is going on and retain it in his memory for long.
Coincidentally the storage area in a ship is also known as the hold. This again is in line with the idea of storage.
Putting everything together the word ‘hold’ here means to understand, to internalise and to remember for life.
