The intruder was looking like Gerard, except for the clothes. The intruder was an absconding criminal and had planned to kill Gerard and then later on impersonate as him.
Why did Gerrard send for the sergeant?
Gerrard sent for the sergeant to arrest the intruder who had tried to kill Gerrard and later on adopt his identity and live freely. The intruder was a criminal who had made a villainous plan to kill Gerrard. However, Gerrard was very clever; he handled the intruder intelligently, and showing his presence of mind foiled his nefarious plan.
