Let the present age of son be 'x' years

Then, the present age of his father = 3x years

4 years ago,

    x - 4 = 4(x - 4)

    x - 4 = 4x - 16

     x - 4x = -16 + 4

         -3x = -12

            x = 4

Therefore the present age of son = 4 years

                 the present age of father = 12 years

hope it helps you
