Answer:
Antonio is really a tragic character in the drama the Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Explanation:
Antonio is always in a melancholic mood, though, he himself doesn't know why. His friends, Salarino and Salanio, make several inquiries to know the cause of his sadness but, they are unable to (Act 1 Scene 1).
When the play starts, we find him to be saying that this sadness of his, makes him boring and that he does not know the actual cause of it. His friends guess that maybe it's because he is anxious about his ships that are away to several different places and are laden with merchandise. They say that if they had so much merchandise laden ships then they too, would surely have been anxious for their safety. Although, Antonio denies this as a cause of his sadness. Then one of his friend's suggest that his sadness is because he's in love. Antonio seems to deny this too.
And just like this, his melancholy remains throughout the play.
