' Anu placed a copper spoon in silver nitrate
solution'.
Answer the following questions on the basis of
above experiment:
i) What will she observe after one hour?
ii) Give reason for above observation.

above experiment.

reaction.
v) What would happen if ferrous sulphate
solution is taken in place of silver nitrate
solution?

Answer:

(i) After 1 hour she will observe that a blue coloured copper nitrate solution is formed and the the part of the spoon immersed in silver nitrate solution, turns silver in colour.

(ii) This is because copper is more reactive than silver and hence, displaces it forming Copper nitrate.

(iii) This is a single displacement reaction.

(iv) Cu + AgNO₃ ⇒ CuNO₃ + Ag

(v) The reaction will not take place if silver nitrate is taken in place by ferrous sulphate as copper is less reactive than iron.
