Anu starts from origin O and travels 5 km towards east then 5 km toward north and then 10 km towards west. Calculate the distance and displacement travelled.

Distance is defined as the total path length covered.

Displacement is defined as the path length from initial and final position.

For solving these kind of problems, drawing a figure is a good habit.

Assume north-south and east-west directions that I have mentioned in the image in the top right corner.

Displacement = AD(from the figure) can be found out by using pythagorous theorem ( Hypotenuse square = Base square + Altitude square.

Distance is the total path length. Distance can never be negative but displacement can be negative.
