Answer:

As the man stoked the hot coals in his fireplace, a large flash of forked lightning intertwined with the cloudy sky, followed quickly by a booming clap of thunder. The thunder was the perfect disguise for another man, wearing dark clothes and a woolen balaclava, to sneak in through the back door.

The man was an expert, being perfectly still until a clap of thunder sounded, so that his footsteps dissolved into the darkness, all the time sticking to the shadows, perfectly camouflaged. This expert technique took him much longer, but he preferred it this way, as it reduced the time frame in which the victim could prepare for the attack.

As the night grew old, the man searched the house, moving with each clap of thunder. It was not until early morning when the man found the resident asleep in his armchair. The resident was

middle aged, with a shock of muddy-blonde hair. His face was worn with the memories of his troubled life, and was unshaven. If he’d been awake, his pale blue eyes, similar to that of a newborn childs, would have been visible.

The only sign that the man was alive was the slow, methodical rise and fall of his chest while he breathed.

His instructions were clear. Kill the man, clear the evidence, dispose of the body. He had done many operations similar to this one before, and had not hesitated to take the responsibility.

As he unsheathed the gun, a light startled him. The overhead light fixture had reflected off a photo in the residents’ hand, and by sheer chance it had been angled into the intruder’s eyes. He crept silently over to the victim to remove the distraction.

As he peered at the photo, he saw the resident embracing a young child, and a woman next to him laughing at a silent joke.

The intruder knew that there was no-one else in the house. He had examined every room, heard every noise that occupied the house. This man was the only occupant of the building. This led the intruder to the assumption that the resident had a family that had been torn apart.

The intruder quietly removed the photo from the man’s hand, being careful not to touch the surface, reducing the risk of fingerprints being left behind, took three steps backwards, placed the photo on the ground and raised the gun once more.

As he was about to pull the trigger, he saw the faces of the woman and child from the photo in his mind’s eye. He saw them laughing along with the man, reminiscing over old times.

This man had a loving daughter who would be shocked to see him gone. As the intruder thought of this, a tear formed in the corner of his eye. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t kill this man.

He lowered the gun, put it back in his pocket, and walked out of the room, leaving no trace he was ever there.
