The Bengal Presidency was once the largest colonial subdivision (presidency) of British India, with its seat in Calcutta, the capital of British-held territories in South Asia.

Until 1947 West bangal and Bangladesh together were undivided province of British india named Bengal.

Bengal was partitioned along religious lines. So upon independence Western Part of Bengal went to India (and was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan, giving rise to Bangladesh in 1971)
