We only have to weigh 2 times to find out the one heavier ball.
The explanation is quite simple.
Just divide the 8 balls in three groups.
Group A with 3 number of balls.
Group B also with 3 number of balls.
Group C with remaining two number of balls.
Now compare the weight of Group A and Group B simultaneously by placing them on either side of the weighing scale.
Case 1:
if The weight of Group A is more than the weight of Group B then it means that the heavier ball is in the Group A. Keep the three balls of Group A and throw the remaining 5 balls in the trash. Now compare the weight of any two balls of group A.
If one is heavier than the other, then this heavier ball is the required ball.
If the weight of both the balls is same then the third ball which is kept aside is the required ball.
Case 2:
if The weight of Group B is more than the weight of Group A then it means that the heavier ball is in the Group B. Keep the three balls of Group B and throw the remaining 5 balls in the trash. Now compare the weight of any two balls of group B.
If one is heavier than the other, then this heavier ball is the required ball.
If the weight of both the balls is same then the third ball which is kept aside is the required ball.
Case 3:
If the weight of Group A and Group is same then, in that case, the heavier ball is in the Group C.
Just compare the weight of the two balls of the Group C and the heavier ball will be the required ball.
In any case, number of times we weighed=2
