So, stars are made up of hydrogen and helium. These elements react with each other and produce energy in the form of plasma. This plasma emits light and hence, stars emit light. Stars also die and, to be honest, their death is more fascinating than their birth.
Planets don't emit light are they are cooled down and are made of heavier elements that don't react with each other.
So, no reaction, no plasma, no light.
