Let Total Expenditure = Price * Quantity
Price increased by 20% and TE remains constant..
We have,TE = 1.2 P * (x) Q -
T ,1.2 P * (x) Q = P * Q X = 1 / 1.2 => 0.83
Hence, if consumption is reduced to 83% of the initial consumption level, then total expenditure will remain same. Which means a reduction of approx 17% in consumption will work.
