Resonance can be defined as the phenomenon in which when one of the two bodies having confusing natural frequencies is set into vibration, then under its influence the other body vibrates with increased amplitude.

For Example:-

Consider two pendula C and D of equal length.

As they have equal length, their natural frequencies are also equal.

If one of them, if C is set into oscillations, the other being at rest,

the second pendulum D too oscillates after sometime.

The pendulum oscillates with the maximum possible amplitude because both C and D have the same natural frequency.

So, energy transmitted from C to D is the maximum. This phenomenon is knownas resonance.

Example:-

When the string of a musical instrument like veena or sitar is plucked once, the amplitude of the vibrations in the string progressively decreases with time.
