 I think he was more of a victim than a villain.

Shylock hated Antonio. Isn't that obvious? Anyone who has read MOV can easily witness the atrocities inflicted on him by Antonio. He called him a 'cur', spitted on his gaberdine and the list goes on.Everyone wants money. So did Shylock.Shylock asked for piece of flesh. Not only did he fail to get it, but also he was asked to give most of his earnings.Her daughter, Jessica, eloped with a Christian. Jessica did the right thing, considering the fact that her father hardly bothered about her. But she stole the ring of Leah. Leah was Shylock's beloved.
