Who was Al-Biruni?
This 'prisoner' had delivered the Hindu Philosophy to the Arab world!
This Story is of that time when Mahmud of Ghazni was attacking on India in the beginning of the 11th century. At that time Al-Biruni was also present with other prisoners in his army. He had wonderful knowledge of Indian education. Al-Biruni In fact, was a minister in the Khiva Empire of Central Asia (a part of today's Uzbekistan). When Mahmud defeated the King of Khiva in 1017 A.D. He captured hin and along with him he also captured Al-Biruni.
Al-Baruni was already studying ancient texts of the Hindus and he was trying to know their culture closely. It was a strange coincidence that on one side where Mahmud of Ghazni was engaged in destroying the Hindu culture, on the other hand, Al-Biruni, running as a prisoner with his army, was studying Sanskrit-Hindu literature and was also engaged in translating them into Arabic.
The problem of Al-Biruni was that because of the a prisoner, he could neither go to the desired place nor meet the people of his choice. He could only visit Ghazni's area and Punjab. Fortunately in that era, there was a lot of Hindus in Ghazni and he got an opportunity to discuss with them. Before coming to India, he had already studied the Arabic translation tof Brahma Siddhant, Khandakhadyak, Panchatantra and Charak Sanhita. He himself translated the rest of Indian literature after visiting India. He also translated many of these into Arabic and thus introducing the Arab world with wider references from the Hindu culture. Al-Biruni translated Sanskrit texts like Kapil's Sankhya, Patanjali Sutra, Paultsya Siddhant, Vrihat Sanhita and Laghujatkam in Arabic. He wrote about 20 books on Indian mathematics, Indian philosophy and various subjects. The most important book in this is 'Al-Biruni's India' which can be called the mirror of 11th century India. In this extraordinary text, we get examples of famous ancient philosophical texts of India, Puranas, Astrology texts, Ramayana, Mahabharata and other texts.
Al-Biruni In this book, quotes from Indian texts related to different dimensions of Hindu life and thus provides a glimpse of the Indian life. He narrates from God, from soul to race, character and from Indian astronomy to Indian Calligraphy. He does not get tired of praising the knowledge of the Indians and considers them a great philosopher, mathematician and astrologer.
Al-Biruni was the exclusive fan of Hindu culture, but he also criticized his contemporary Hindus. He says, 'they (Hindus) want to keep what they know as a personal habit, far away from the foreigners, they do not want to share their knowledge even to the people of their own country. But the ancestors of the Hindus were not so narrow-minded like the present generation.'
When Al-Biruni finished this book in 1030 A.D., at that time Mahmud Ghazni had already died. 18 years later, in 1048 A.D. this great scholar of Indian education also went away from the world.
