Once there was a very good little girl who lived with her parents in a small bamboo house. One day she was watching over a basket of paddy drying in the sun in front of her house when a large golden crow flew up and ate every grain.
"Oh dear, oh dear," cried the little girl said. "My parents and I will go hungry now with no rice to eat."
The golden crow felt sorry and and gave her directions to come to his nest to get payment for the paddy. The next day the little girl walked into the forest as instructed and saw a very tall tree with a crow's nest high in the branches. The crow was waiting for her and said he would let down a ladder for her.
"Do you want a ladder of gold or silver or wood?" he asked.
"A wooden one, thank you," the little girl said for she has never seen ladders of gold or silver before. But the crow let down a ladder of gold.
When she reached the nest, the crow offered her a drink of sweet juice.
"Would you like it from a gold cup, a silver cup or a clay cup?" he asked.
"A clay cup, thank you," the little girl said for she has never seen cups of gold or silver. But the crow gave her drink in a cup of gold.
The crow then offered her plate of rice cakes.
"Would you like it on a gold plate, a silver plate or a clay plate?" he asked.
"A clay plate, thank you," the little girl said for she has never seen plates of gold or silver. But the crow gave her cakes on a plate of gold.
Finally, the crow showed her three bags, big, medium and small.
"This is your payment," he said. "Please choose a bag."
The little girl said, "It was only a basket of paddy so I cannot take a lot," and chose the small bag. The crow insisted that she take the big bag and she came home with it. When she and her parents opened it, it was full of rubies and they became very rich.
Meanwhile, their next door neighbours heard the story and their daughter was made to sit in front of the house to watch over a handful of drying paddy. The golden crow ate up the paddy and the girl demanded payment.
"Come to my nest tomorrow," the crow said and gave directions but the girl followed the crow home and asked for a gold ladder to be let down. But instead the crow let down a ladder of wood.
She asked for a drink in a cup of gold when she reached the nest. This time too the crow gave the drink to her in a cup of clay.
Then she asked for rice cakes on a clay plate. This time too the crow gave her cakes on a clay plate.
Then she asked for payment and said she wanted the biggest bag, which the crow handed over. It was very heavy and she and her delighted parents opened it at home, whereupon a large snake came out and chased them from the village.
Moral of the story: if any bird or animal or tree says it will grant your wishes, be sure not to seem greedy even if you are

1)The story is told of two polite people who were having dinner together. On the table there was a dish with one big piece of fish and one small piece of fish. They politely said to each other: “You may choose first.” “No, you may choose first.” This went on for a while. Then the first person said, “OK, I’ll take first.” And he took the BIG piece of fish. The second person said, “Why did you take the big piece? That’s not polite!” The first person said, “Which piece would YOU have taken?” The second person replied, “Why, I would have taken the SMALL piece, of course.” The first person said, “Well, that’s what you have now!”
The quality of politeness is one which seems to be disappearing in our society. As I grew up, I was taught to say, “Yes, ma’am,” and “Yes, sir.” These terms are not often heard from young people today. Even the words “please” and “thank y seou” are not used as often as they should be.
Make an effort today to see that the love you show to others around you includes the quality of politeness.
2)A teacher could not be called an ardent advocate of etiquette and good manners, but dealing with people, he always showed natural politeness and courtesy.
One evening a young student drove the teacher home and was rude to the police in the way. Justifying himself, he said:
– I want to be myself and let everyone know what I feel. Politeness is nonsense, the air shake.
– It is true, – agreed the teacher kindly, – but our car tires are filled with air and you see how it helps to soften the blows.
3)A Little boy went to a telephone booth which was at the cash counter of a store and dialed a number.
The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation.
Boy: “Madam, can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?”
Woman: (at the other end of the phone line) “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”
Boy: “Madam, I will cut your lawn for half the price than the person who cuts your lawn now.”
Woman: “I’m very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting the lawn.”
Boy: (with more perseverance) “Madam, I’ll even sweep the floor and the stairs of your house for free.”
Woman: “No, thank you.” With a smile on his face, the little boy put the receiver down.
The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy.
Store-owner: “Son….I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.”
Boy: “No thanks.”
Store-owner: “But you were really pleading for one.”
Boy: “No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!”
This is called "Self-Appraisal” Give your best and the world comes to you !!
