When the plant cells are placed within a liquid of greater concentration than that of the cell plasma, water passes out from the cells due to osmotic pressure and this procedure is termed as plasmolysis.
When pesticides are sprayed around the roots of unwanted plants, the concentration of the water outside the plant roots increases, resulting in flowing out of water from root cells, due to which the plant ultimately dies.
When preservatives are added to fruit jams or jellies, the water passes out of the fruit cells due to higher concentration outside and minimizes the chance of the harmful bacteria growth on these cells.
