Let the number of girls be 5a

Number of boys = 8a

Total students = 6422

=> 8a + 5a = 6422

=> 13a = 6422

=> a = 494

Number of girls = 2470

Number of boys = 3952

Number of girls participated = 2470 / 5

= 494

Number of boys participated = 3952 / 8

= 494

Total number of students participated = 494 + 494 = 988

Required fraction = 988 / 6422

= 1 / 13

Hi,

Here is your answer,

Let us consider the number of girls be 5x

Ratio of girls and boys is 5:8
No. of boys → 8x
 Given, Total number of students → 6422
 8x + 5x → 6422
 13x → 6422

x → 6422/13
x→ 494

Girls → 2470
Boys→3952

No. of girls  and no. of boys are (Total) → 6422
No. of girls participated = 2470/5
           →       494
No. of boys participated = 3952/8
          →       494
Now, we need to add no. of boys participated and no. of girls participated = 494 + 494 → 988
Fraction of the total students took part in the camp 98/6422
       →   1/13

Hope it helps you !
