What was the importance of Ajantha caves

They are near Aurangabad in Maharastra. They are buddist cave monuments. There about thirty of them. THese cut from rocks.
These caves include paintings and sculptures - the finest masterpieces of Buddist religious art. The are the finest surviving examples of Indian art (painting).
The paintings depict Buddha and jataka tales.
The caves were monasteries or colleges for buddhists. The caves also depicts the organizational culture of buddhists at that time. The mural paintings are very beautifully done. THe architecture of the moasteries is also special with a large statue of buddha. THe architecture reflects the movement from Hinayana to Mahayana buddhism.
