Sunlight provides the energy needed for photosynthesis to take place. In this process carbon dioxide and water are converted into oxygen (a waste product that is released back into the air) and glucose (the source of energy for the plant).Experiment to show that sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis - definition. Take a plant with destarched leaf. Leaf is partially covered with black paper on which a design is cut. Expose this plant to sunlight for few hours and perform a starch test with iodine solution.Remove the leaf from beaker and wash it in water at room temperature. Place this leaf in petri dish and add few drops of iodine solution over the decolourised leaf. The area of the leaf that was uncovered performed photosynthesis and will have starch, therefore turned blue-black with iodine solution
