Vining peas. Vining peas are used for canning fresh (‘garden peas’), quick-freezing or artificial drying and are normally grown under contract, or by co-operating groups. The contracting companies usually supply the variety they require and decide on times of sowing (February–May) based on a ‘heat unit’ system. This is in order to spread the harvesting period to ensure a regular and constant supply to the processing factories.
