Answer

Given :-

  • The quadratic equation 5x² - 2kx + 20 = 0 has real and equal roots.

★To find :-

  • The value of k.

Formula used:-

  • Quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 has real and equal roots iff D = 0, where D is called Discriminant and evaluated as D = b² - 4ac

Solution:-

On comparing the equation 5x² - 2kx + 20 = 0 with ax² + bx + c = 0, we get

a = 5

b = - 2k

c = 20

Since, quadratic equation 5x² - 2kx + 20 = 0 has real and equal roots.

⟹ D = 0

⟹ b² - 4ac = 0

⟹ (- 2k)² - 4 × 5 × 20 = 0

⟹ 4k² - 400 = 0

⟹ 4k² = 400

⟹ k² = 100

⟹ k = ± 10
