Propanol is the iupac name of both c3h8o and c3h7oh .The first is a molecular formula that doesnt give any idea about the actual compound it is.

for example C3H8O can be formula for ether

CH3 O C2H5 which is completely a different compound .

C3H7OH not only indicates that this is an alcohol but explains that the " -OH" is attached at the teminal carbon

Its name is 1-propanol.

There are sveral diff. varities of propanol itself having different properties.

eg CH3 CH(OH)CH3 HAS different properties. Its called 2-propanol
