Explanation:

The first world war began in August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip. This event was, however, simply the trigger that set off declarations of war.

War happened because of several different events that took place in the years building up to 1914. Firstly, there was the role of empire. Great Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia all had empires.

It became known as the Great War because it affected people all over the world and was the biggest war anyone had ever known. It even came to be known as 'the war to end all wars', as no conflict before World War One had caused destruction on this scale before.

It ended on the 11th of November 1918. Difference in policies were to blame, although the immediate cause of World War one was the assassination of Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The war started mainly because of four aspects: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism.
