1) Answer: Carole does not understand the term ' race ' . but from the tone of Norton's she understand that something is bad . she has not heard the word 'mulatto' either she is so taken aback when she is asked wether she is a mulatto or not , she fumbles and ask what the word mean .

2) Answer: Henry Norton has an insensitive character who attacked a young girl by asking 'what' she is, what are her parents'’ race, how would she colour their face in a colouring book etc. He made young Carole understand the real world, which is full of inequalities for black people like her.
