Hi Friend !

The Solitary Reaper is a poem written by William Wordsworth which tells us about the life of a simple peasant girl who derives all her joys from nature itself. She is a pantheist ie a nature lover and nature appeals to her in the most beautiful and touching manner. She hails from the highlands of Scotland and keeps working in her field all alone, oblivious to her surroundings .She reaps the grass while humming a soft tune .The poet asks all passers-by to either halt for a while and listen to the young maiden's song or gently pass by without bothering to disturb her .
The poet compares the reaper's song to be more soothing and refreshing than that of a nightingale's welcoming tunes to a band of fatigued travellers resting in the shady oasis of the Arabian sands . The poet is curious to know the theme of the beautiful song sung by the maiden since he himself doesn't understand her dialect. Apprehending from the sad tunes of the song he speculates it to be of some sorrows dealt with in the distant past or of some historical battles and disasters. He muses that it could also be related to some mundane concerns or some inevitable losses which she had endured and may suffer again. Her endless song seemed to reverberate across the entire valley . The poet is utterly mesmerised by the enchanting voice that he hears and the music creates a lasting impact on her heart . Subsequently he mounts uphill and by that time the song had physically died although it remained in his heart for years to come.

Moral:- people come and go in our lives. But some leave an indelible impact in our hearts even after they are physically no more. Not many can lead a life full of simplicity like the solitary reaper. Her life too was like a sweet song which died at a certain point of time.

Characters:- The solitary reaper, passers by And the poet,
