Similarity between Penang, Singapore and Malacca that caused the British to try to master it:

  • Southeast Asia's The Straits Settlements were a collection of British colonies. The Straits Settlements were first created in 1826 as a component of the areas under the administration of the British East India Company. In 1858, the British Raj took over these areas, and on April 1, 1867, the Straits Settlements came directly under British rule as a Crown province. As part of Britain's regional reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies, the colony was dissolved in 1946, following the end of the Second World War and the Japanese occupation.
  • Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Dinding were the initial four settlements that made up the Straits Settlements. In 1886, the Cocos Islands and Christmas Island were added. With effect from 1 January 1907, the island of Labuan off the coast of Borneo was also included in the colony; in 1912, it became a separate town within it. Today, the majority of the former territories are a part of Malaysia, from which Singapore broke away in 1965. Australia gained sovereignty of the Cocos (or Keeling) Islands in 1955. In 1958, Christmas Island was moved. In 1996, their governance was merged to create the Australian Indian Ocean Territories.
  • Following the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, which divided the Malay archipelago into British and Dutch zones in the north and south, the Straits Settlements were established. As a result, the Dutch colony of Malacca and undisputed control of Singapore were traded for the British settlement of Bencoolen (on Sumatra). The majority of people living in the Settlements were Chinese, with a small but significant minority of Europeans. In 1832, they relocated their capital from Penang's George Town to Singapore. Their dispersed nature proved to be challenging and expensive to manage after the firm lost its monopoly in the china trade in 1833.
