Apart from tetrahedral geometry, another possible geometry for CH₄ is square planar with the four H atoms at the corners of the square and the C atom at its center. Explain why CH₄ is not square planar?

ANSWER:-

CH4 is tetrahedral not square planner because carbon belongs to p-block having sp³ hybridisation.

for square planner it must have hybridisation dsp² , which is not possible in case of carbon because it has no d-orbitals.
