First Act: Hamm seems to be down with some fever or flu as he is being prepared in the morning by Clov.
Importance of the situation: To show how weak and easily sick Hamm is and the important and necessary relationship with Clov
Second Act: Hamm's parents show up.
Importance of the situation: It shows the way the family of Hamm is and how rigid and authoritarian it is.
Third Act: There is light hearted play and a jolly atmosphere between Hamm and Clov
Importance of the situation: To expose how false the relationship between the two is and how pretentious they really are.
Fourth Act: Hamm becomes cruel to Clov and Clov is hurt by his behavior and considers leaving him.
Importance of the situation: This is to show that Clov is in an advantageous position and Hamm is not as sweet as he seems to be.
Fifth Act: Clov makes it seem as if he is leaving the abusive Hamm
Importance of the situation: This shows that even though Hamm is abusive, he still needs Clov to take care of him.
PARAGRAPH:
This play is very unusual compared to most literature poems, definitely very different than Macbeth. However, one big difference in this play is that there is not an explicit climax present. Nothing really tells you that, yes this is the climax, or let's say the highest peak of the play. I guess this is what makes this play so interesting, because it jumps around to different scenes and does not really follow the common literature structure. But, I also personally feel that this nontraditional structure and nontraditional personalities of the characters makes this play even more tempting to watch or even read. The impact this play has had on me is that it caused me to have an open mind and realize that even this type of story or structure is acceptable. A play or story does not need to be traditional for it to mean something. Beckett has portrayed a great play as well as example to all the endless possibilities writing can bring. I also feel that the way Beckett utilized different symbolic figures in the play had a deep effect on the reader. Even the way, the play began with the setting of a dark room, this instantly began to portray a mood of loneliness or darkness. For instance, the author makes readers feel how trapped these characters are in this one room. I think this broad-minded way of writing is a great concept and does have abstract effects on the reader.
