Introduction of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was popularly known as Kalam Chacha for students and children. He was also called as the Missile Man of India and People’s President. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen “A. P. J.” Abdul Kalam. 
The Early Age of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Dr. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu, India. His fatherJainulabudeen was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque; his mother Ashiammawas a housewife.Even though his ancestors had been wealthy traders, the family had lost most of its fortunes by the 1920s and was poverty-stricken by the time Kalam was born. As a young boy, he used to sell newspapers in order to support his family’s small income.In his school years, Kalam had average grades but was described as a bright and hardworking student who had a strong desire to learn. Mathematics was his favorite subject and he used to study for hours.
College Life of DR. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
After completing his education at the Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram, Kalam went on to attend Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli. During his college education, he was assigned a project to design a low-level attack aircraft with a group of few other students. The project was difficult to execute and on top of it, their professor guide gave them a very tight deadline to submit their project. They all worked hard together, working under high pressure, and finally managed to complete their project within the given deadline. The guide was highly impressed by Kalam’s dedication and hard work.
Career As a Scientist
After graduating from Madras Institute of Technology he started his career as a scientist at DRDO in 1958. He worked with the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) under the renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai in the early 1960s and he also designed a small hovercraft at DRDO. In 1963-64, he visited space research centers in Virginia and Maryland and after returning to India began working on an expandable rocket project independently at DRDO in 1965.  In 1969, he was happily transferred to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) where he served as the project director of the SLV-III, India’s first indigenously designed and produced satellite launch vehicle. His increasing helpful involvement with governmental agencies led to his appointment as the Scientific Adviser to the Defense Minister in 1992. In 1999, he was appointed as the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India with the rank of cabinet minister.
Political Journey of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was 11th President of India(2002 to 2007). He was competing against  Lakshmi Sahgal.  He has been awarded with the awards like Bharat Ratna(in 1997), Padma Vibhushan (in 1990), Padma Bhushan (in 1981), Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (in 1997),Ramanujan Award (in 2000), King Charles II Medal (in 2007), International von Karman Wings Award (in 2009), Hoover Medal (in 2009) and many more. He never married in his lifetime.
Sadly on  27 July 2015, aged 83, Dr. Abdul Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. He spent his whole life in making India a better country in the field of science and technology. He always used to encourage the youth of India through his speeches, work, and writings. In his autobiography “Wings of Fire,” he shared his life experience with us.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Legacy
Dr. Kalam left a legacy behind him. He is very famous in the youth of India, he is a role model, a guide to the youth of India. He started education with nothing and he reached the pinnacle of success, his story is very inspirational. Though he achieved such great success he was always down to earth, simple and direct person. These are just a few qualities of him one should perceive. He is the real modern day hero of India.

On this day we will remember his inspiring work for a betterment of India. He will always be in our memories as Peoples’ President and a great human being
