Answer:

The length of first piece is 1 meter and the length of second piece is 2 meter.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : A pile of height 3 meters is struck by a speeding car breaks into two pieces such that the first piece is 1/2 of the second.

To find : The length of both pieces?

Solution :

Let the length of first piece be x.

Length of second piece be y.

According to question,

A pile of height 3 meters.

i.e. x + y = 3 ....(1)

The first piece is 1/2 of the second.

i.e. x = y/2 .....(2)

Solving equation (1) and (2),

Substitute the value of x from (2) into (1)

y/2 + y = 3

3y/2 = 3

y = 2

Substitute y in (2),

x = 2/2

x = 1

Therefore, The length of first piece is 1 meter and the length of second piece is 2 meter.

Step-by-step explanation:

let the length of first piece be x

let the length of second piece y

a pole of height = 3m

x + y = 3................1

the first piece is half of the second

x = y/2...................2

from (1) and (2)

substituting eqn (2) in (1)

x + y = 3

y/2 + y = 3

3y/2 = 6

y=2

x = 2/2

x = 1

the length of first piece is 1m

and,

the length of second piece is 2m
