The cone scales each carry two ovules which usually develop into seeds on their ventral (the side closer to the distal end of the cone) surfaces. The second part of the seed scale grows in the second year (after fertilization) of the seed scale and is called the apophysis.

Apophysis of pinus ovule:

  • The cone scales of the pinus have two types of ovule. One type is called the umbo which grows in the distal region.
  • The other part of the ovule develops from the seed scale after the fertilization in the second year which is called apophysis of the pinus ovule.  
  • The umbo is the yellow-colored pine which has Sharp spike. Some of the subspecies of the pines need three years to complete the cones.
