If a gynoecium has multiple, distinct (free, unfused) carpels, it is apocarpous. If a gynoecium has multiple carpels "fused" into a single structure, it is syncarpous. A syncarpous gynoecium can sometimes appear very much like a monocarpous gynoecium.

Gynoecium is the female reproductive part of a plant and is made up of one or more carpels.
Carpels consist of : Ovary , style & Stigma
Ovary : Enlarged basal part
Style : the elongated tube
Stigma : Receptive surface for pollen grains
▪︎Each ovary contains one or more ovules attached to a flattened cushion like placenta.
When more than one carpel is present ,
● If they are free - Apocarpous
eg: Lotus & Rose
● If they are fused - Syncarpous
Eg : mustard & tomato
