When the narrator sees them for the first time, they give the impression of being fruit pickers. They try to sell wild strawberries to the narrator. But later, the narrator finds that they are not professional fruit pickers. They do all sorts of odd jobs to earn money. They work hard day and night and seem to earn a sufficient amount of money. But why do they work so hard? They wear worn – out clothes and eat the cheapest kind of food. The narrator thinks that the boys are saving money to emigrate to America. But here again, appearances prove deceptive. The truth comes out to be what none could have ever imagined. The boys were working hard and putting by all their earning for the treatment of their sister.
