reason is that the person makes himself appear in a different way to the people because he is afraid of what he really is is scared of revealing himself thinking that he might not b liked by the people I that way.in doing this thing he hides his real identity and puts on a mask of fakeness which hides his reality through his appearance.That's why people often say ,"we see what the person before us wants us to see,not what he really is and what we want to see of him".
