Answer:

In the poem ‘The Ballad of Father Gilligan the poet W.B. Yeats beautifully depicts the devoted service of an ideal parish priest, Father Gilligan. The old and tired priest even after a day’s hardwork of attending the poor ill- stricken parishioners, readily renders his service to another poor man. Though he complains he has no rest, no joy or peace, he at once confesses that it is his body that speaks so and not he. He then prays to God to forgive his words. The poet gives us a clear picture of a devoted, kind, pious and serviceable priest. The rhyme scheme abcb and the stress patterns give the poem a rocking motion and the visual images add beauty to the poem.

Explanation:

The whole poem is a bundle of imagery . There is one old priest named Father Gilligan who was very tired. Half of his 'flock' were dead and he had to perform a priest's duty while passing for all of them. On one such day of tiredness, while he was asleep on a chair, another man sent for him.
