Epidermis : outermost, protoderm-derived layer of cells covering the stem, root, leaf, flower, fruit, and seed parts of a plant, provides a protective barrier against mechanical injury, water loss, and infection. Cutin : are fatty substances deposited in the walls of epidermal cells, forming a waterproof outer layer called the cuticle.
