Number of apples purchased is 4.
- As the given problem is a problem of linear equations one needs to have two equations to find the solution but in this particular question there is only one solution.
- Let us form the equation first, let us consider the number of apples as x and the number of watermelons as y.
- Given equation becomes : 7x + 5y = 38.
- We can check here by substituting the values of x (number of apples) as 0,1,2,3,.... adn so on.
- we check for x=0 in the equation, we get y in decimals which cannot be true.
- Similarly for x=1,2,3 , we get y in decimals which cannot be true.
- now for x=4, we get y as 2.
- now for x=5, we get y in decimals which is false and for values greater than 5 we cannot compute as the value of y appears to be negative which even isn't true. so we stop here and the answer we get is x(number of apples)=4.
