The anomalous expansion of water has numerous applications, the foremost being that when water freezes, the ice floats to the top. This creates an insulating layer, which allows liquid water to remain underneath. This allows aquatic life to survive in freezing environments. Without this property of water, it is highly unlikely that life on Earth would have evolved to the diverse state that currently exists, and humanity certainly would not exist.
