Application Of Solubility-product To Precipitation
Solubility product is the product of concentrations of ions.
Equilibrium concentration,
And solubility product,
• When solubility product is larger than the ionic product, , then a unsaturated solution is formed and no precipitate will be formed by the addition of more solute.
• When solubility product is smaller than ionic product then a super saturated solution will be formed and and excess of the solute will form precipitate.
• When solubility product is equal to the ionic product, then the solution will be saturated and further addition of solute will form more precipitates.
Sea- water and lake contains sodium chloride. This sodium chloride is impure which can be purified on the basis of common ion effect. Sodium chloride dissociates into its component ions. When this NaCl solution is passed through HCl gas then

The presence of common ion, Cl- the dissociation of NaCl is lowered and ionic product becomes greater than solubility product and it forms precipitate.
