The van der Waals equation was first trial to explain the critical temperature and pressure of the real gases. Over this (Tc & Pc) the gases and liquids do not differ. The heat of evaporation and the surface tensions vanish. They become zero.

Nowadays the vdW is not used for real gases. There are better equation of states.
