A literature survey concerned with the use of aluminum matrix composites (AMC) is presented. Production processes and properties of AMC are briefly summarised for continuous fibre, discontinuous fibre and particulate reinforced AMCs. Properties affected by the reinforcement are also accounted and compared to the matrix material raised properties as well as reduced properties. Following this, the importance of systematic materials selection is discussed. Finally, the aeronautical, military, automotive and sport applications are analyzed.
