Hi!

Irrigation is the process of artificially watering crops and plants when there is no rain.

There are few types of irrigation :-

● surface irrigation - most of the irrigation processes fall under surface irrigation in which water is allowed to run over the field.

● furrow irrigation - in case of crops which do not need too much water the crop is planted on ridges and water is allowed to run through the furrows between the ridges. it is called furrow irrigation.

● basin irrigation - for crops like rice which need a lot of water the field is flooded with water by making bunds all around it. it is is called basin irrigation.

● drip irrigation - a lot of water is wasted in surface irrigation through evaporation and percolation. so it is not suited to areas where water is in short supply. drip irrigation is preferred in such areas. it involves the use of pipes fitted with small tubes called emitters. the pipes are laid over or under the soil and the emitters release water drop by drop around the roots of the plants.

● sprinkler irrigation - it is often used when the land is uneven and thus not suitable for surface irrigation. this method is better than surface irrigation in that less water is wasted and water is distributed more evenly. pipes fitted with sprinklers are laid over or along the field. the sprinklers have rotating heads which spray water over the crops.
